Going Upstate: The Avery Family in Woodstock

Four generations of Avery Family art are celebrated in this 2026 Woodstock Byrdcliffe Guild exhibition catalog:

  • Milton Avery
  • Milton’s wife, Sally Michel Avery
  • Their daughter, March Avery
  • March’s son, Sean Cavanaugh
  • Sean’s daughter, Delilah Cavanaugh

Milton Avery and his wife, Sally Michel, visited the Woodstock Art Colony in the 1950s, returning in the summer of 1962. After 1965, the surviving family members continued to travel upstate to their home in Bearsville, a hamlet in Woodstock. This catalog faithfully reflects the exhibition held at the Woodstock Byrdcliffe Guild from July 11 to October 3, 2026. The show featured the art of Milton Avery, his wife Sally Michel, and their daughter, March. The exhibition also highlighted works by March’s son, Sean Cavanaugh, and his daughter, Delilah Cavanaugh.

The catalog includes lengthy essays by Sean Cavanaugh and noted art historian Bruce Weber about the Avery family and their art. The volume is 119 pages and incorporates more than 90 color and black-and-white family photos and art images. Trim size: 10 x 8½ inches; published by the Woodstock Byrdcliffe Guild in 2026.
