Narrow Gauge Trains of the Catskills: Remembering Six Decades of Railroad Service for the Catskill Mountaintop Villages and Their Fabled Resorts
Author John Ham has been publishing pictorial books about the railroads of New York State and New England for more than twenty years. With this title, he returns to where it all began: his native Hunter Township, high up in the eastern Catskills.
Two different railroad routes served the high Catskill Mountains of Greene County, transporting holiday-goers to and from the resorts. The crowds multiplied rapidly between 1882 and 1915. Vacationers arrived summer after summer in humble narrow-gauge coaches and eventually in plush Pullman Sleepers, filling the boarding houses to the rafters.
This profusely illustrated book tells the history of the Ulster & Delaware Railroad, the Catskill Mountain Railway, and the New York Central Lines through text and photos. Hardcover, 304 pages, trim size 9 by 11 ½ inches. Published by Stony Clove and Catskill Mountain Press in 2024.
