Native Stone: The Art of Tomas Penning

This catalog is from a show that ran at the Woodstock School of Art from October 9 to December 11, 2021. Bruce Weber, an independent art historian, was the curator. Below is a brief excerpt from Weber’s essay in the catalog:

Tomas Penning (1905–1982) was one of the leading sculptors of the historic Woodstock art colony. A Midwesterner by birth, Penning settled on the fringe of Woodstock in the hamlet of High Woods in Saugerties in the early 1930s. Over the next five decades, he achieved recognition in the Hudson Valley as “the bluestone sculptor” because of his devotion to this native stone of Ulster County. He embraced bluestone as the medium for his carvings and advocated for its architectural merits. Harvey Fite, his neighbor and creator of Opus 40, referred to his friend as a “poet, philosopher, and sculptor.”

Softcover, 52 pages, 44 black and white images, trim size 10 x 10 inches. Published in 2021 by the Woodstock School of Art.
