In 1938, Harvey Fite (1903—1976) purchased an abandoned quarry in Saugerties, New York. Over 37 years, he created the monumental 6.5-acre rock sculpture known as Opus 40.

Opus 40: The First 20 Years

Harvey Fite (1903—1976) was a co-founder of the Bard College Fine Arts Department. In 1938, he purchased an abandoned quarry in Saugerties, New York, about 100 miles north of New York City. Over 37 years, he created a monumental 6.5-acre rock sculpture known as Opus 40.

Brendon Gill of Architectural Digest said, “Opus 40 is the greatest earthworks sculpture I have ever seen.”

Opus 40: The First 20 Years is written by Mr. Fite’s stepson, Tad Richards. It tells the story of the creation of Opus 40 in words and close to 80 black-and-white pictures.
